The Best Tools for Left-Handed Sewing

Hi Y’all!!  Where are my fellow left handed seamstresses!?!  This post is for you!  Being left handed isn’t always easy in the sewing world.  Being a lefty myself, I know the struggle.  Silly fact about me, I write upside down.  Like paper turned 90 degrees and my wrist awkwardly twisted.  I can’t remember a time I didn’t write like this but I’m assuming it started in grade school when I’d use a pencil and end up with the lead all over my hand.

So let’s talk about some of my favorite left-handed sewing tools and why I love them.

Gingher Left-Handed 8″ Dressmaker Shears:  These are the perfect pair of scissors for anyone who is left-handed and sews.  I have tried several brands but these are my favorite.  They a professional-grade, high-quality scissors.

Fiskars Cutting Mat: The easy to read measuring grid counts down from left to right and the degree lines are on the right side of the mat, making it easy to cut your fabric without getting in the way of yourself.

Left Handed Sewing Machine: There is a company in Austrailia who has developed a sewing machine for the left-hand dominant seamstresses.  I don’t use this machine but think it’s great there is something out there.

My hubby and daughter are lefties, so I live with the constant reminder that life is sometimes more complicated when you are left handed. For instance, the time when my daughter had to learn to crochet, but the only person we knew who could demonstrate it left handed was age 9! I had never even considered the perils of the right handed rotary cutter! When my daughter is ready for a rotary cutter we will definitely be investing in one of those switchable blade cutters. Many thanks!

Hi Dionne!! So glad you found this helpful! I actually learned to crochet from this sweet lady who used to come every Friday to my office. She was right handed but would sit in front of my so I could mirror what she was doing. 🙂
